Thallium elemental and isotopic systematics in ocean island lavas

چکیده

The Earth’s mantle exhibits marked chemical heterogeneity. We provide an examination of thallium systematics in ocean island basalts (OIB): new high-precision trace element analyses, including Tl, and Tl isotopic compositions for 48 OIB spanning the entire range observed Sr-Nd-Hf-Pb isotope ratios. All investigated are characterised by ubiquitous depletion requiring sources to have concentrations as low 0.2 ng/g, which is order magnitude lower than estimates primitive similar inferred depleted mantle. interpreted reflect near quantitative removal during subduction inefficient recycling into deeper If true, composition surface materials may not be readily translated OIB. dataset shows a >10 ?-unit primary variation, from ?205Tl = ?6.4 +6.6. However, majority samples (32 48) within uncertainty values (?205Tl ?2 ± 1), show no co-variation with radiogenic composition. Notably, only minor (11 samples) outside range. concentration contrast between inputs such sediments altered basalt so great that additions (<1% mass) high-Tl material will dominate budget lava, decoupling expected result. Thallium therefore difficult link directly variations components they reflect. Indeed, if isotopically distinct oceanic crust and/or were efficiently recycled sampled via OIB, more variation would observed. markedly unsystematic likely residual subducted material, acquired en route shallow-level crustal assimilation.

Major element variations in Hawaiian shield lavas: Source features and perspectives from global ocean island basalt (OIB) systematics

[1] Among volcanic hot spots globally, Hawaii has the highest magma flux, yet there is significant controversy surrounding the composition of the mantle sourcing Hawaiian lavas. In order to place constraints on the source lithologies of Hawaiian lavas, we explore relationships between major elements and radiogenic isotopes in tholeiitic, shield-building lavas. Olivine-fractionation corrected la...

Iron isotopic systematics of oceanic basalts

The iron isotopic compositions of 93 well-characterized basalts from geochemically and geologically diverse mid-ocean ridge segments, oceanic islands and back arc basins were measured. Forty-three MORBs have homogeneous Fe isotopic composition, with dFe ranging from +0.07& to +0.14& and an average of +0.105 ± 0.006& (2SD/ p n, n = 43, MSWD = 1.9). Three back arc basin basalts have similar dFe t...

Carbon and Oxygen Isotopic Systematics in Calcite and Dolomite from the Sangan Iron Skarn Deposit, Northeastern Iran

A total of 40 samples from carbonates and 8 samples from silicate rocks were analyzed from the Sangan iron skarn deposit to examine behavior of the oxygen and carbon isotopes. The higher values of ?18O are from metamorphic calcite and dolomite and lower ones are from granitic rocks. Although the ?18O and ?13C values of calcite and dolomite in marble yield the highest values in the Sangan deposi...

Isotopic and Elemental Determination in Some Romanian Apple Fruit Juices

H, C, O stable isotope ratios and the content of some heavy elements of 31 Romanian single-strength organic apple juices collected from four Transylvanian areas are discussed in this study. The aim of this study was to measure the ²H/¹H, ¹⁸O/¹⁶O, ¹³C/¹²C ratios of these juices and their elemental profile and to establish a database of authentic values to be used for adulteration and authenticit...
